"Courtland, Kansas, is my home town, and was the most wonderful place to grow up.  I believe to this day , due to the family environment, that Courtland is producing the top notch graduates of anywhere.  Most of my family still lives there.  Thank you."    Debra Lindberg-Miller, former Courtland resident, now living in  Florida

Private Spaces: The Courtland Project

Courtland, Kansas, population 334, is situated in north central Kansas, one mile south of U.S. 36 and about 16 miles west of U.S. 81 on Kansas 199, and just slightly east of the geographical center of the United States.

Courtland is a farm and ranch community situated in Republic County.  Corn, wheat, and pumpkin are major crops, and the cattle raised there produce the finest steaks you have ever sunk your teeth into. Courtland has two gas stations, one bank (the Swedish-American State Bank), one bar and restaurant combo (Pinky’s), and -- believe it or not -- an arts council and a full-time dedicated arts center.

The arts center is housed in a converted and once disused storefront, on Main Street, in “downtown” Courtland, across the street from Pinky's. In June of 2006, talks were initiated with members of the arts council to produce a photographic project that would document and celebrate the strengths of a town that some might aptly call “pure Americana,” and in early October shooting was begun. In that one trip, which lasted nine days, the artist visited 27 homes (plus Pinky's) and exposed over 1400 frames. In doing so, this became the artist’s first all-digital project.

Courtland Project #1

In July of 2007, a 20-piece exhibition was presented to the residents of Courtland at their annual Fun Days Festival.  Although all images were captured digitally, the entire exhibition was printed on traditional photographic paper and was framed and presented to the highest standard; the collection remains in its entirety with the community.  Each image in the exhibition is available directly from the artist either as a signed and numbered Limited Edition print, or in our economical Signature Series size. Please see the Order Page for pricing and ordering information.
